I have not been posting lately because thankfully my hair is doing really well. I had to switch from Desogen to Diane in January 2000 after the Desogen failed to work any longer because of falling estrogen levels (I was only on it about one year). Diane had the anti androgen, but I think it was the higher estradiol dosage that truly helped me. Diane has been great. I have had little to no shedding except for normal shed cycles. The reason for my writing is that I have a new Ob/Gyn who is great. It only took me 4 years living in Denver to find her. ANyway, we reviewed my background and she suggested a saliva hormone test. She prefers this type of test over a single blood test since it measures your DHEA, estrodial, progerterone, cortisol, testosterone and melatonin levels over your entire cycle. While a blood test would be a more exact way of testing, the cost and time of doing blood draws needed over the 28 day cycle would be cost prohibitive since you would need to examine estradial, pregerterone, cortisol and melatonin activity. All very expensive blood tests. Anyway, so I did the saliva (spit) test. Well low and behold we may have some answers to my hairloss probs. Even though I am on Diane, my estradiol levels are a little below normal, my progesterone was good, Testosterone was low normal (as it has been on previous blood tests). Next, I had low DHEA levels. My doc feels that if I was not on the Diane I would have serious problems more than hairloss because of the low estrogen. (I have to have a bone scan to make sure I have no bone loss started.) She also put me on a regimin of fairly high doses of a B5/B6 combination to more naturally raise my DHEA. If this does not work after 3 months, she will put me on a low dose of DHEA. Funny enough, four years ago, Dr. Orentreich suggested I take a small dose of DHEA after my initial blood tests with him. Anyway, sorry this is so long but I thought you may have some ideas on the subject. I will also have my FSH, thyroid and prolactin levels checked in a week or so to see what is going on there. I thought it was interesting to see how the pill is helping me. That is not to say that Diane is the perfect drug. It definately has its side effects, namely a little flabbiness... but it is better than having no hair. Do either of you know of a BCP that has the same estradiol level as Diane without the progesterone used in the Diane but a more normal one. The Desogen did not make me so flabby and if I could find a BCP with the same strength estradiol but different progesterone that may be the ticket. Thanks for listening. ECR

I notice that you've experienced some success after returning to BCPs. I've just restarted after being off for one year and seven days into it I'm noticing my hair loss going up again. Did you have a similar experience? I was averaging 60-80 a day prior to this last week, now I'm 80-100, and on Sunday I lost a 170. Please, let me know your thought.
