I am 27 and I am not currently on any type of medication or birth control. I took Accutane for 5 months when I was 22 and I noticed a tremendous amount of hair loss at that time. The doctor reassured me it would grow back 100% so I listened. Well, it did start to grow back and after 2-3 years, my hair was pretty much back to normal. Then I went on birth control (Estrostep FE) and I still did not have any problems with hair loss. It was actually the weight gain that made me discontinue the pill. I stopped taking it and 4 months after being off the pill, my hair started falling out like crazy.
I waited a few months before consulting a doctor because I thought it was stress or something temporary. Well, I finally went to both my internist and my dermatologist and neither of them had anything reassuring to tell me. My internist had no clue what it could be and checked my thyroid, which was fine. She then concluded that it could be hormonal because I stopped the pill and told me that my body just needs a little time to regulate itself and that the hair loss would stop in a few months. The Dermatologist said that I wasn’t balding but I should try Nizoral shampoo and Rogaine anyway. I used the shampoo randomly and never bought the Rogaine because I was scared to start yet another treatment like I did with Accutane and birth control pills…I felt that my body was just rejecting all of these synthetic treatments and they were causing the hair loss.
Well, now another full year has gone by and my hair loss has not subsided one bit. In fact, it is getting so much worse. My hair-dresser said I have half the head of hair I did a year ago. My hair is everywhere. So I came to this site and I have been reading all the feedback to determine what the best course of treatment will be for me and I have to say that I am very confused.
I have been taking iron and Biotin for 2 weeks now and I’m hoping those supplements will tackle the problem but I am skeptical. The next question whether or not to go on Rogaine? I am sooo scared to do this. I can’t afford one more hair to fall out of my head and it doesn’t make sense to use a treatment that makes your hair fall out more but then may not work at all to cure the problem. In the end, if it fails, I will have lost more hair.
Is there anyone out there that has any advice/alternate treatment that might work for me? As with many of you, I am afraid I am going to go bald with the rate at which I am losing hair…
