Here's what I know about BCP and AGA after spending much time and money going to lots of different doctors for an answer.
Hair-friendly BCP (examples include Desogen, Ortho-Cept and Diane 35) can POSSIBLY slow down the process of AGA for some individuals, but they are not a cure. If a certain number of your hair follicles are pre-programmed to miniaturize and eventually stop producing hairs, then there is nothing that can be done permanently about it. Taking BCP can only stave off the inevitable, by temporarily protecting the follicles from the androgens that cause AGA. If you are over 35 however, BCP will have less of a protective effect from AGA, as your estrogen level is already starting to decline, and the BCP can no longer boost estrogen levels high enough to cancel out the circulating androgens and already progressing AGA.
My experience with hair loss and BCP has proven this theory. From age 30-33 I took Ortho-Cept, and had not, prior to that time, experienced any hair loss. During the course of BCP my hair grew to its fullest potential, and even the normal shedding I had before the BCP went down to a minimum. I stopped the BCP at 33 and around age 35-36 noticed the onset of AGA. Lost about 75% of hair over my entire head. I asked my OB/GYN for an Ortho-Cept prescription again at 36 and took it for six months before giving up. It just no longer had the positive hair effect on me. In fact during the first three months on it, my hair shedding INCREASED significantly!!! Before, with the AGA, I was loosing mostly the miniaturized hairs, but as soon as I started taking the ortho=cept, I was shedding the few long unaffected hairs I had left. Doctor said it was just my body adjusting to the progestin component of the BCP. I waited 6 months, but the shedding only slowed back down to what it was before the BCP. So i just stopped taking them. I figure why mess with my body's natural processes for the sake of maybe keeping a few hairs on my head.
Also, my doctor told me that the AGA would return as soon as I stopped BCP, which would have to happen at some point. I mean you can't take BCP forever. That would be so unhealthy.
If you are under 35 however, taking BCP can have a better effect on AGA. But again, it will return as soon as you stop, even if it is ten years down the road.
