I am new to reading this board, and just read through a lot of old posts to get a feel for what is or isn't working for all us women experiencing hair loss. After reading it all over I have to say that it seems like all of us are just trying to avoid something that is happening naturally to our bodies. There are some exceptions I'm sure, like the women who are under 35. But for the most part, if you test your thyroid and iron levels, and are in normal health, hair loss can just be a normal part of aging. Hormone levels are a powerful player in the aging process, but changing and dropping levels of female hormones is NATURAL. There is so much debate in the forum about which BCP to take and what to do when it no longer works, and considering taking one with a higher dose of estradiol when the body's own estrogen drops. It's so crazy! Does anybody see how ridiculous that is? Taking more estrogen because your body's level is declining NATURALLY as you age? When BCP first came out, it was loaded with estradiol (about 50mcg on average). Over the years they lowered it because it WAS NOT HEALTHY TO TAKE THAT MUCH, and lots of other complications can arise. They lowered it to decrease these bad health benefits, and yet here is a whole forum of women who want to up their intake just in case it can help push back time and they can keep some hair for a while. 50% of women have hair loss by the time they reach age 50. Look around, I see it everywhere, even in younger women. If you really pay attention, you see there are so many women with thin hair, wide parts, and even baldness in areas.
I don't mean to sound preachy...believe me I came onto this forum because I too am concerned about my own hair loss. But after reading so many of the posts I was suddenly struck with how crazy it is that everyone is so willing to essentially experiment with their natural body processes or hormone levels for the sake of pushing back the clock.
We should learn to accept this hair loss as part of the natural aging of our bodies. There is nothing to be afraid of or ashamed. If so many of us are experiecing this, then at least we are in good company!
