Just wanted to thank everyone who has shared a little bit of their heartbreak so that I don't have to feel so alone! I started shedding a lot about 6 weeks ago, and found 2 big bald patches 2 weeks later. I had been switching BCP's for a year and the last one took the cake (according to a lot of research I've been doing). Went from Ovcon 35 to Ortho-Novum to Mircette to Necon. I was on Necon for about 2 months when my hairs started to jump ship. I can tell you from personal experience that 1)switching around frequently is not good (damn HMO's) and 2) switching from a lower androgen BCP to a higher one again WILL cause hair to shed. Anyone looking to switch because hope is becoming dismal, PLEASE, PLEASE, check out this link to see the androgen levels before you do! http://www.wdxcyber.com/ncontr13.htm Unfortunately, the doctor's don't spend any time investigating the causes, so it's up to us to figure out what's going on with our hair!! So far I have tried to minimize anything that may damage the hair more: 1)stopped taking BCP (my chinese herbal doctor tells me that I should let my body's estrogen level go back to its natural balance. I agree; from researching the web, I'm finding that chemical hormones aren't guaranteed to replace natural hormones, and who knows if my body was rejecting them?), 2) take hair vitamin (not skin and nails, hair only, GNC Ultranourishair: not enough biotin and b-complex vitamins in skin/nail formulas), 3) use organic shampoo without any sodium laureth sulfate or lauryl sulfates, 4) continue to wash hair daily, as I don't want oils and sebum clogging up the follicles, 5) continue taking multivitamin for women, and 6) take supplements of Ho Shou Wu pills (a chinese herb). My dermo has me putting on topical steroid solution, but I have to stop in another week.
I don't know exactly what's been doing what, but over the last 3 days (since I started using organic shampoo), my hair shedding in shower and blow dry has decreased about 1/2. I have stubble on my scalp that had thinned out, and a few on the bald spots. I'm hoping this is a trend and will update significant changes.
Ladies, please be careful about the BCP's we subject our bodies to. Since it takes a few months for any BCP to take full effect, be cautious when you decide to switch to another BCP in hopes of stopping. And watch those androgen levels!
