Typically exclamation point hairs encircle a bald circular spot. It looks like a broken off hair but it is very thick at the scalp, and in my experience it hurt to touch it.
Are you sure its not just a broken hair with nothing to do with areata? Alot of people have broken hairs just through normal wear and tear to the hair during brushing and styling which is not alopecia areata.
