so glad i found these forums! my dermatologist & PCP both thought i was nuts & i was starting to believe it until i discovered i'm not the only one with hair odor. i've been reading a lot about fungal scalp infections and am curious if anyone had tried Griseofulvin for treatment?? i'm considering going to mexico & getting some. i'd like to know if it worked, if so, how long, & side effects?? thanks.

I've suffered with a "yeasty" smelling scalp for twenty years and have tried numerous medications and home remedies - Neutrogena T-Gel, T-Sal (salicylic acid), Nizoral, Apple Cider Vineger, and so on. The best of them (T-Sal & vineger) still only lasted about six hours. Then it would be back. Then something happened: I rented a house with a shallow well and the worst water I've ever had the (dis)pleasure of showering in. Lot's of dissolved sulfides and sulfates in the water (that rotten egg smell). My wife noticed soon after, that my hair (strangely enough) smelled fresh and clean. As soon as I moved out of that house (and into clean water), my problem was back! Sulfur had to be the key. After all, it's a common ingredient in medicated soaps and (some) shampoos. I purchased a Zapzyt Cleansing Bar - a sulfur-medicated soap. I got mine at drugstore.com, but I'm sure it can be found numerous places. I lather it up and use it as a shampoo (after I've already washed and rinsed with a regular mild shampoo), leave it on for a few minutes, then rinse fully. It worked INSTANTLY. Not after two weeks, or several days - it worked the FIRST DAY. I can even skip a day of washing my hair and I still don't have any odor. I know it may seem strange using a hand/facial soap on your hair but it actually does a nice job, with no residue. I am now cured, and I hope that this will be your cure as well.
