Great news! I just got the results of my biopsy. The numbe of hair follicles is way above (almost twice!) average, and they are working properly. Whiting predicts that I will get at least 90% of my hair back. I also have the tiniest bit of AGA which he thinks will resolve itself as soon as I get over this acute TE episode. There is no indication that I will have any problem regrowing or keeping my hair. All the shedding hairs are being replaced by new growth. My shedding has slowed down - probably thanks to the cortisone shot. I am continuing the Rogaine for 6-12 months to help stimulate the hair growth, but I will not have to continue using it after that and I will not lose the hair when I stop. It looks like this must have been a stress reaction from the back injury and the adoption. My back is fine now, the adoption papers are being certified, and I do not have to worry anymore about going bald - so I hope that is the end of my stress for now.
Lisa: I am seeing "a real hair expert" - in fact he is the co-author of a medical text book on the subject, as well as director of Baylor's hair research center.
The biopsy was not done for the sake of his "wine collection" - it has helped enormously to fully explain my hair loss, to determine if there might be more
than one cause, and to establish a prognosis for my recovery. It defined the quantity and quality of my follicles. And the best part is that I now know I do
not need to worry - my hair is growing back and I just need to be patient.
