My hairloss started in Feb-Mar 2001. It started w/my bangs and temples getting very thin over 2-3months. Then I noticed that my hair had thinned all over. It was also drier than usual not sofy and silky and oily as it usually was. I noticed that most of the hairs falling out had a white bulb on the end (so I think I'm loosing hair from the root).
During this time I've also been tired. I used to sleep 7 hrs a night, almost like clockwork. Now I sleep at least 9hrs and even then I usually get a little tired/sleepy by midday. I've also been getting a lot of headaches lately and sometimes get a slightly sore throat.
I posted on the thyroid and TE forums and have been told to get my ferrin checked (which of course the 2 doc's I've seen so far have never mentioned). I'm wondering if anyone on the Anemia site has been having the same type of loss (from the root) and symptoms (tired, headaches, etc...)? I am going to an endocrinologist next week and will demand a ferrin test.

Does anyone know how much iron a woman should be taking daily to combat hairloss possibly due to anemia? is there a safe yet effective amount?

Over the past year my hair loss has been getting steadily worse. I'm 49 yrs old (not menopausal yet) and was told it's just normal. Went to my doc for some blood work and found my ferritin at 3! Also hypothyroid. Although he said treatment for both probably wouldn't affect my hairloss. Is this true? Is there hope that at least if what I lost won't grow back, might the shedding lessen? Also, I've read about Shen-Min. Anyone have any opinions on it? Does it work? thanks so much ronnie

Although my doc said that my blood work is 'fine', i have been having trouble donating blood. also, i noticed, on my CBC test, that my HCT, or hematocrit, levels were only 31.7 (the normal range is 38-46). Anyway, I went to UP's medical website and learned that low levels (especially this low) = anemia. Has anyone else had this experience? Thx.
