Hello Jackie...took me a long time to figure where ur post was, that forum was so messed up..the name of the multivitamin i was given is Supradyne, made in switzerland..its not a hair multi-vitamin, it hardly has an hair vitamins, umm a lil of biotin and a lil of vitamin B12 + things not meant for my hair, i dun take it regularly coz i dun think its of any use, i asked another doctor today for a hair multivitamin she just smiled at me, i guess i'll have to find those multivitamins myself, well these doctors are anything but hair specialists, i go to them for tests, i only went once to some derm who told me im iron deficient and thats my problem, i never went back to her, coz i know shed tell me that my iron is still low, or who knows i might go to her again to shoot her.....i bought an anti-dandruff tree shampoo, i was so excited to find it in the pharmacy that i forgot that i dun actually have dandruff, i thought it might help with my burning scalp, i dunno if i should use it or give it to someone, i read in the ingredients that its got TEA lauryl sulphate, i read a lot about Sodium lauryl sulphate being terrible for hair, i wonder if TEA laurul sulphate is as bad, i dun wanna sit and try it and see for myself, id hopefully find a job soon and im gonna use up my first salary trying derms, my parents arent taking me seriuosly so i gotta take care of it myself...hope u r doing well and having a great hair day...best hair wishes

low ferritin and hair loss - my results

I'm a 34 year old female with a very long history of chronic telogen effluvium (10 plus years). About 2 years ago, my hair loss got out of control to the point where I had to wear a wig. To make a long and complicated story short, I visited numerous dermatologists who were rather insensitive and didn't thoroughly investigate the cause of my hair loss. About 1 1/2 years ago, I gave up on a male dermatologist I was seeing because he told me to accept that I probably have female pattern hair loss; he gave me this diagnosis in spite of the fact that everyone (male and female) in my family going back several generations has a very full head of hair. I always had lots of hair until about my early to mid-twenties & then it started falling out real bad on and off over the years. I wasn't happy with this diagnosis so I decided to try another dermatologist. My new dermatologist who is female was far more concerned and sensitive to my problem. She immediately ran a slew of iron studies, autoimmune studies, thyroid tests, and everything under the sun known to cause hair loss in women. Well, it turns out that my ferritin was extremely low (less than 10) and I have a positive ANA (possible lupus). My male derm. had told me that my ferritin level at the time of seeing him (about 17) was fine. My new dermatologist immediately started me on iron supplementation (plus Vitamins C, b-12, and l-lysine). Its been about one year since I've been taking ferrous sulfate twice a day. My ferritin level is finally up to 47, which is 40 points higher than it was one year ago. I've noticed that the excessive daily shedding has slowed a lot & I've had some regrowth. My derm. says that there's been about an 85% improvement and to keep taking iron. So there is hope for women experiencing significant hair loss. When I first started seeing this dermatologist my hair loss was so bad that she thought I had universal alopecia. I now have almost enough to feel comfortable in public. I still don't have enough hair in my mind to go without an integration piece, but certainly a lot more than I had one year ago. I don't know if I'll ever regain the full head of hair I had years ago because of such sustained shedding for so many years. All I can offer in terms of advice is do not settle for a simple answer regarding your hair loss & by all means please switch doctors if you're not happy with their diagnosis. Unfortunately, for me it took several years to find out that the primary cause of my hair loss was low iron stores. This is simply not acceptable and these doctors who didn't help me are unfortunately in the majority. Lots of dermatologists (particularly men) do not educate themselves well enough on female hair loss.

Hi Buffy. Losing hair from the roots with the little white bulb attached is normal and doesn't really tell you anything in and of itself other than the fact that the hair you are losing was in telogen phase. So it's good in the sense that your hair isn't breaking off, it's just falling out like a normal resting hair. That could be a sign of TE. Low iron can definately impact hair loss and if you're tired, you could be anemic too. However, given that you are so noticeably tired you should probably look into several things. 1. Iron. Have them test your blood iron (hemoglobin) and stored iron (serum ferritin). Though the National Institute of Health norms show the normal range as 10-150 for serum ferritin, most women need iron to be between 70-100 for proper hair growth. So if you test at 12 and they say, "oh, that's normal", ignore that and try to get your iron to 70 or more. 2. Get your endo to test your thyroid. TSH, T3, T4, ANA, etc. Get a full work up. Thyroid (over or under active) can impact hair AND can impact energy. 3. Hormones. I don't know how old you are but if you are a day over 30, your hormones could be acting up too. I would recommend a full blood and saliva workup of progesterone, estrogen, testoserone, DHEA etc. If your doctors fight you on testing all this stuff, don't listen. You won't be able to find out what's wrong without the information from these tests. Good luck. Let us know how it goes!
