Hi, I agree with Steph for sure. Some sources I've read say that shedding can continue when the iron is below 70. No matter what the trigger, serum ferritin not below 70 seems to be a factor in recovery and stopping shedding. Rushton also says Hemoglobins should be 13, but hemoglobin can go up to that before serum ferritin and lead people to discontinue iron when their iron stores are very low, keeping them on the edge of hair loss so any medication or hormone change can push them back into TE. Iron is only one factor. It's a good idea to test zinc, b-12, folate, copper--and I got too high in zinc which is very bad taking supplements of that in a multi for only a few months. Less than that. You might want to check your thyroid and hormones--estrogen types, progesterone, and androgens like testosterone, leutenizing hormone, follicle stimulating hormone, aldersterone, DHEA, growth hormone...there are so many but those seem standard. When your doctor checks your ferritin beware when they call and say, "The doctor says this is in normal range." Ask for the specific numbers if not a copy of the lab report which will have ranges. Ask for the range. The range for serum ferritin seems to indicate that around 12 is normal for serum ferritin. Well, it is also correlated with a lot of hair loss to be below 70. Even if people have AGA, they need to be above 40 to regrow using Rogaine. That makes me question a bit whether the person has actually GOT AGA and not poor nutrition to the hair roots that rogaine helps with by increase of circulaton. But anyway it highlights the import...if you are planning any hormone changes that are very optional, get your iron up first because it is a buffer aginst bouts of TE that any hormone change can trigger--Well, that's a start. Iron supplements are discussed on the TE forum, but your doc can recommend. Many take L-lysine with iron. I take natural beta carotene to help iron absorb when I eat any food or phytates with it because I have a touchy tummy...hope this is not too much to mention at once. Best wishes and I hope you grow hair soon. Tell us what your ferritin is soon, ok, when you get that far? It helps us all to share lab results I think. I don't know abut the flaking etc. Just the hair loss part. December
