Hi Emma,
It's so good to hear from you! I've been trying to follow your recent developments on the BCP forum. I'm happy to hear you are doing better. We definitely have some similar experiences! Forgive me if I don't remember your entire history, but I'm trying to figure out why the Spiro made your situation worse. Are you sure you have androgen sensitivity? Have all other potential causes been ruled out? If so, then possibly the Spiro is not getting to the root (no pun intended...Ha, Ha) of your problem. How is your estrogen level? If it is low, that could certainly be a contributing factor. Estrogen prolongs the growing phase of the hair. If your levels are too low, it could cause TE by constantly shifting the hair into shorter and shorter growing phases, which causes constant resting and shedding phases. However, the Spiro should not have made it "worse". Maybe your body just reacted badly to it, but I don't think we can assume anything right now. Is there anything else that could have caused the hair loss to get worse after you started the Spiro? Think back...try to consider all of the variables. Did you go off BCPs? Or were you taking low dose BCPs?...which can also cause a low estrogen problem.
Was it you who asked about natural ways to raise estrogen and about salmon oil capsules on the other forum? If so, the most natural way to raise estrogen is to gain huge amounts of weight...put on more fat!! I doubt that this is an appealing option. The more fat cells you have, the more estrogen you will make. Not the best solution!! Other options, such as herbs, etc. are weak and usually not very effective. You must be careful with these things. They can cause additional problems. Also, I want to warn you about the salmon oil capsules...DO NOT use fish oils...they have very high levels of toxins. All of the contaminants are concentrated in the oil of the fish. This is currently a major concern in the food industry. It's very unfortunate!! But it won't help your hair anyway.
It takes more than just a few days or weeks for hair to show signs of a systemic change, such as going off or on meds, etc. However, I am contemplating a new theory that hair which has already been in a resting phase may suddenly release from the follicle due to certain biological changes. (I plan to go into more detail about this in the future.) We want to shorten the telogen phase, so if resting hairs release in preparation for new ones to grow(hopefully), that is great. The sooner they release, the better.
I do not know if going off Spiro will cause another phase of hair loss for you later down the road. Only time will tell. Even then we cannot say for sure whether it was the cause, because we do not know for sure that it would not have happened anyway. That is why repeated testing is necessary in scientific research, while controlling all the variables. There is also a possibility that the Spiro was finally starting to help when you went off of it. You could be experiencing the first of it's benefits right now, which will end soon, if that is the case. But it seems logical that you would have responded sooner if it was helping.
The only thing I can promise you Emma, is that I will never give up on your hair. Please keep in touch, and give me time to answer back...I'm really busy these days! I'll be thinking of you......Beta
