Hi Judy Your doctor probably prescribed dexamethasone (it's a steroid) to switch off the androgens which are produced by the adrenal glands. My own doctor won't prescribe it as it can be quite a 'difficult' drug but I've heard that it can produce results if everything else fails. (Dexamethasone is usually prescribed for hormone dependent tumours but in much higher doses than for hair loss.) The dose I've been quoted for hair loss was 1/2 mcg. per day which is a minute amount. 1/4 is taken in the morning and 1/4 in the evening. Have you had a hysterectomy? If so all your androgens come from the adrenals and to a much lesser extend the pituitary gland. That could be the reason your doctor prescribed this medication.
Personally I've tried most things and nothing has worked consistently. Androcur was effective for about a year and Minoxidil keeps me sort of going but I had to increase the strength in order to get the same result.
Karen.
