In case some of you may be interested, the following is from the 4th Intercontinental Meeting of Hair Research Societies.

<QUOTE> Finasteride is a well established drug in the treatment of androgenic alopecia in men. The issue of potential efficacy of finasteride in androgenic alopecia in women is still controversial.

This controversial relates to the potential dose of finasteride which should be used, treatment duration and to the question whether finasteride is at all effective in women. We applied finasteride to 8 women with androgenic alopecia refractory to other methods of treatment.

6 of these patients were postmenopausal women and 2 patients have undergone hysterectomy due to uterine myoma prior to the treatment.

All patients were otherwise healhty and laboratory findings were within normal range.

In all patients a significant, diffuse decrease in hair density, especially in midscalp areas was observed within the last 5 years before onset.

The efficacy of treatment was evaluated, based on hair count in trichograms, comparison of photographic documentation, clinical evaluation and a patient satisfaction sheet.

Our results show significant improvement in trichogram after 4 months of treatment. This improvement was accompanied by clinical improvement and growing patient sastisfaction.

No side effects were observed.

These results indicate that in some cases, finasteride at the dose of 1 mg per day might be a useful therapeutic alternative in some female patients with androgenic alopecia.
