Hi, Virginia:
My consultation with Dr. Legro went very well -- I think he's excellent! I would not hesitate to recommend that you see him, IF you have evidence of having PCOS. I say this because he's a reproductive endocrinologist who's practice is limited to PCOS patients.
In spite of my hairloss, periodic acne, and ovarian cysts, Dr. Legro does not believe that I have PCOS. He gave me a very thorough exam, which included another ultrasound. Although he ordered a few additional labs, he is nearly certain that I do not have PCOS because the ultrasound aparently showed signs of ovulation. He explained that many women have cysts that are "just hanging around" and not the result of PCOS. A PCOS diagnosis typically requires 3 elements: a positive ultrasound, lab work that clearly supports androgen excess, and irregular periods. Since he belives my ultrasound is normal, my labs (hormone and glucose levels) are all normal, and my periods have always been regular, I don't seem to meet any of the major criteria. I am quite relieved to find out I don't have it -- but obviously am still frustrated not to have a definitive diagnosis for the hairloss...
Anyway, back to you. If you are concerned that you have PCOS, I would suggest that you see a local endo who can order a pelvic sonogram and do the necessary bloodwork (free and total testosterone, LH, FSH, DHEA-s, insulin, glucose tolerance) for you. If any of the results look suspicious, then I would consider making the trip to see Dr. Legro up in Hershey (He's affiliated with Hershey Medical Center, which is part of Penn State).
I'm sorry that I can't offer any other specific doc recommendations. The local endo I've been going to is "just okay." Have you seen an endo yet? If not, perhaps your GYN can recommend someone? Let me know what you decide to do--
Margo

Adidas Forum Now here's a shoe-in for the list of the year's best gaming-related clothing : Adidas has brought back its ZX 5 hundred running shoe, and, since it originally is from the '80s, the gaming inspired design and coloring is an easy choice ... Right? The kicks would possibly not be the coolest part of the deal, either ; they come packed with a combination bracelet/USB flashdrive containing ZX Runner, a computer game based on ... The shoe itself. GameCulture writes that the game stars a character named'DJ Zed' who, according to Adidas, has 5 mins to'run, moon-walk, climb walls, avoid some dodgy-looking bullies, collect power-ups, and pull off loony rooftop-to-rooftop stunts' to get on-stage before his set starts. It's suitably retro -- see for yourself in the video we've included after the breakdance. More info Adidas Forum
