The "Rogaine Revolution" in the late 80's started with balding men - tens of thousands of them, scattered all over the country - hearing about how the blood-pressure medication LONITEN (generic name, minoxidil) had been found by physicians to be linked with thicker beard growth and increased body hair when taken by patients systemically. This news circulated, UNOFFICIALLY, within the U.S. medical community, and thousands of balding men all over the country persuaded their doctors to prescribe Loniten tablets, according to a certain formulary, which were then crushed up and put into an ethanol suspension by pharmacists, and applied topically to the scalp.
This "underground movement" took several years to build. I remember at the time I was living in Puerto Rico, and I knew several guys there who were getting the concoction from their doctors. They called it a "black market".
When I returned to the states, I noticed this was a huge and growing phenomenon. It led to rather rapid clinical trials by Upjohn of a low-concentration minoxidil topical solution. And thus, the VERY FIRST legal, clinically-tested, prescription medication to treat MPB was born. "Rogaine" (or "Regaine", in Europe) was born. This kicked off a revolution in the US, whereby big pharmaceutical companies eventually launched all kinds of research projects to find even better drugs to halt and reverse MPB.
Well, folks, we're now not in the 1980's, but instead in the TWENTY-FIRST CENTURY.
Maybe what we need is a 21st Century version of the "Rogaine Revolution". Only now, we won't be getting doctors to prescribe an obscure antihypertensive medication, but instead buying dermal papilla self-injection kits, or getting our doctors to do this procedure on us, on an ad-hoc basis. Gradually, this movement might build up steam (just like minoxidil did in the 80's), to the point where more and more physicians are doing it... and then, the consensus in the US medical community will gradually change, from believing that hair cloning/cell therapy for MPB is 10-15 years away, to understanding that it CAN BE DONE NOW. Today, inside your doctor's office (doctors are best qualified to provide the STERILE CONDITIONS necessary to do the procedure without infection, and regulators will eventually want only MDs or RNs to do it!)
Maybe we need to build this movement just like a movement was built for MINOXIDIL, in 1988-1990, and buy these DP cell kits!!
Some of us will take them to our doctors (especially if we have close friends who are docs, or if we're docs ourselves!)... and JUST DO THE PROCEDURE.
Gradually, word will spread in the US medical community. Gradually opposition will crumble. Eventually the procedure will be accepted. Some doctor or team of physicians at a Dermatology Department in a major teaching hospital somewhere in the US will ask the FDA to expedite quick clinical trials, which the FDA will do. The procedure will be approved for use in doctors offices across the land.
And Gho? Gho will be shouting to the media that he "thought it up first". But by then, noone will care. We'll all have our hair back.
We need the Millennial equivalent of the Rogaine Revolution, guys!
