I hate to mess up your history lesson but my understanding according to Gersh Kuntzmans book is that one scientist at Upjohn was responsible for persuading them to seek approval for its use as a hair growth product.

Once the news got out that they were pursuing FDA approval, guys started getting it made for themselves.

This was my introduction to Rogaine and I remember hearing this from my derm who then got my pharmacist to make some up using Loniten tabs before it was available as Rogaine.

I dont believe many people would have got their docs to prescribe it before knowing about Upjohn conducting trials, especially since it was a blood pressure med. Very few docs were willing to prescribe Proscar when Propecia was still undergoing FDA trials.
