RU58841, flutamide, or castration:  which is more effective?

Here's a little scientific evidence to help answer this question:

Two completely different studies have reliably found that castration reduces the size of hamster flank-organ areas by around 75%. The original Battman RU58841 study, ("RU 58841, a new specific topical antiandrogen: a candidate of choice for the treatment of acne, androgenetic alopecia and hirsutism", J Steroid Biochem Mol Biol, 1994 Jan;48[1]:55-60) castrated some hamsters for comparison with RU58841, and got flank organ area reductions of 76.6% in only two weeks. In the study "Antiandrogenic Effects of Topically Applied Spironolactone on the Hamster Flank Organ", Weissmann et al., Arch Dermatol Vol. 121, Jan 1985 page 57 (you can read the full text on www.hairlosstalk.com in the Online Library), they also castrated some hamsters for comparison with spiro, and they got 74.6% reductions in the hamster flank organ areas, and (reading from the provided graphs) reductions of more than 83% in the actual volumes of the underlying sebaceous glands.

What about RU58841? In the Battmann study, the largest dose they used (0.1 mg) reduced the flank-organ area by only 52.4% after 3 weeks. However, that number may not be completely fair because a larger dose (or over a longer period of time) may have performed better. There is no indication in the graph that Battmann provided that that particular RU58841 dose had reached a plateau in that particular period of time.

However, there's another tremendously helpful study that DID find the maximum effect from RU58841. That would be: "Local Inhibition of Sebaceous Gland Growth by Topically Applied RU58841", Matias et al., Ann N Y Acad Sci. 1995 Jun 12;761:56-65. They found a MAXIMUM reduction in the actual hamster ear sebaceous gland areas of 60%, and this was not increased by either greatly increasing the dose of RU58841, or by extending the treatment period.

And how well does flutamide do? In the oft-quoted study, "Local and Systemic Reduction by Topical Finasteride or Flutamide of Hamster Flank Organ Size and Enzyme Activity", Chen et al., J Invest Dermatol 105:678-682, 1995, they achieved hamster ear sebaceous gland area (exactly what was measured in the aforementioned RU58841 study) reductions of 67.8% on the non-treated side, and 67.4% on the treated sides, from 0.3 mg of topical flutamide.

There you have it: when it comes to reducing hamster sebaceous glands, castration appears to be slightly more effective than flutamide, which in turn appears to be slightly more effective than RU58841.

There's an obvious point which I'm making here for all you RU58841 enthusiasts: we already know all too well what kind of hair regrowth to expect from castration, which appears to be the most effective "antiandrogenic" treatment of the three mentioned in the subject of this post. Question for you: what makes you think we can expect any better performance from RU58841?
