I agree with you wholeheartedly that the major failing point of communism/socialism is that it assumes that you can coerce people into helping one another. This goes against 65 million years of evolution whereby the individual has a strong sense of competition relative to his neighbors. We're not ants, we don't live for the collective good. We compete in everything, and that is just the way humans are, whether they are under Communism, Socialism or Capitalism. The other major point is, like most animals, if a certain subsistence level of needs is met, a significant percentage of the population pretty much takes the easy way out and quickly learns to live at this level. Thus Communism in particular culls dependence and lack of drive in people, making them tolerate poor conditions while giving up their freedom.

I would also add that Communism in particular, where the populace is ruled at gunpoint, does nothing but set up a system where the selfish individuals in power end up taking the best for themselves. This happens over and over in these systems, where ultimately the idea that they (the elite in power) are providing so much for the common man that they are entitled to a little more to ease their burdens. Uh, can you say Capitalism thinking? No system is going to overcome man's selfish nature, that is just the way it is. Capitalism and freedom, if balanced with a few key limiters to create level playing fields, harness competition in the most fair way. America is not an economic powerhouse out of luck, but because it's system gives the most latitude to the individual, not some half-baked idealogical twit with a gun in his hand sticking it in your back.

I will make a sidenote here too, that even here in the good old US of A, we have folks who tread dangerously into socialistic/communistic ideas. An example was the healthcare plan floated up by the Clintons, wherein it was clearly stated that it would be illegal for doctors to practice outside the healthcare system and illegal for patients to choose to go outside the system. In other words, you go where the government tells you comrade. A constant vigilance is required to defend your freedoms, even within a "free society". Mankinds tendency towards selfishness is revealed often in taking power over others, the biggest threat of governments whatever their form. Witness the oppressive nature of the ATF and other government agencies lately. My point being, always work towards weaker government intrustion, knowing that across the aisle the politicians are working to gain more power no matter what the form of government. They may say they care and are looking out for you, but their actions more often than not speak otherwise, creating dependence and taking your freedom in the process as they assume greater personal power.
