I agree that capitalism allows it's citizens greater financial freedom than any other system. This is an aspect of capitalism that the corporations and wealthy want to maximize to their benefit. With capitalism, you are free to starve in any corner of the country you like. The conservative way says that you must pull yourself up by the bootstraps and make your own way in life. Fine. Jesus himself would agree with that I'm sure. What the conservatives in our country and yours fail to see is what Marx observed. Not all people have the same life chances. Recent studies have shown that if you're born into poverty then chances are you'll stay there. The Greeks and other civilizations showed us that government can work for ethe benefit of the majority. Our goal as a race of beings should be to bring as many of us as we can with us to the finish line, and a good way to do that is to have a civilized society. A civilized society has the means and will to look after ALL of its citizens, not just the wealthy and the priveleged elite. Canada's conservatives follow the same trickle down economic mantra as their republican counter parts in the USA. That is tax cuts for the rich because the theory goes that the more money in the hands of the rich, the more will trickle down to the working class through their spending. Absolute hog wash. The Reagan and Bush years proved that this approach to tax cuts simply puts more money in the pockets of the affluent who buy yet another Mercedes or summer home in a foreign land, or invest in China or where ever labor is cheapest. Ask Cathy Lee Gifford about that. Our provincial conservative government was trying to claim sole responsibility for the positive economic phenomena in Ontario over the last few years, pointing to their tax cuts for the wealthy in Ontario. Many people here, biased toward this political party, swallow that hook, line, and sinker. The conservatives here often like to mention family values. What kind of a family gives to a few and not to the rest of the family. I don't know how they can sleep with themselves at night. We still have third world conditions that exist for our native people, and homelessness is on the rise all accross Canada. We are not just seeing homeless men now, but entire families out on the streets and living in cars. And yet Ontario, aside from the USA, is one of the wealthiest places on earth. What's wrong with capitalism?.

What ever this system we have is called, it's not working for a hell of a lot of people. Again, the purpose for a government, at least in theory, is to maintain law and order, infrastructure for it's citizens, and to create a positive environment for free enterprize to occur, but not for MP's and congressmen to be in the pockets of big business. This has been a weakness of any system, regardless of political ideology. Yes, Bill mentioned a firing squad for the corrupt politicians. This was Stalin and Lenin's solution to a system that was thriving on corruption that invlolved the highest authorities and "business people" in a country that was starving and neglected as a result of bad leadership. Stalin and Lenin drunk with power and stepped way over the bounds of what justice and democracy should allow.

In Canada in the early 70's, corporate taxes represented about 80% of government revenues and individual taxes about 20%. Today those numbers are reversed, and the banks and corporations here are making unprecedented profits. Our very own Statistics Canada employee during the Mulroney federal government, Mimito Hiroto spilled the beans that our annual national deficit payments were broken down like this: 50% was due to compound interest payments; 40% was due to unpaid and deferred corporate income taxes; 8% was due to program spending in general; but only 4% was actually due to social program spending. IOW's what many in your country perceive and fear as communism.

If Jesus were alive today he'd be there protesting and being an advocate for the poor, the very ones he came for to give hope to. He'd have been there at the Summit of the America's protest I'm sure.
