Maneless, I agree. I think you could say that with hairloss, a person loses BOTH symmetry and the quality you referred to, which women respond to: VIGOR. Hair = vigor = sexuality, on some deep unconscious level.
Now when a man who's seriously thinning shaves it all off, he recaptures the lost symmetry. But what about his vigor? If he's muscular and macho, he still has vigor to spare, so he can still attract lots of women. Yes, he's lost the "vigor" from his hair but has enough residual vigor from his macho look and attitude that it *often* makes up for the hair.
But again, not every guy can pull this off. A male who is *not* macho by build or style, can shave off all his hair, and he'll just look like an alien.
And with respect to symmetry, notice that the guys with slightly receding hair who style it in an assymmetrical way, tend to look bad (think of George Bush Sr.)
But the guys with slightly receding hair who style it symmetrically (like combing it backwards from the hairline) still can look semi-good. Of course, it doesn't compare to a full, thick head of hair at all. For a long time, Jack Nicholson fit in this category. His hair was seriously receding, but he styled it in the most symmetrical way possible and so was still widely considered a "sexy" man in Hollywood circles. He was still able to play leading man, opposite a younger attractive woman like Helen Hunt in, "As Good As It Gets".
Slightly-built, androgynous men who have very thick hair are still considered "sexy" by women, because they have a high degree of symmetry. They may not have the macho element from their bodies, overall appearance, and attitude, but they possess symmetry and the residual vigor that stems from their thick hair AND the sense of bodily "wholeness" that this confers. Think George Stephanopolous. He has such thick hair, in fact, that he's able to wear it in an assymetrical style, but it doesn't matter because it's so thick and because of that you really don't notice.
So when you lose hair, you lose two elements of attractiveness: symmetry and vigor. Both are complimentary parts of human sexual attraction.
