Addendum:  on Howie Mandel

I noticed in the billboards in Vegas that Howie Mandel (who was always far from macho), in addition to his new "hairstyle" (actually no hair at all on his head - all shaved off), has a small, symmetrical goatee and moustache, and two small "hoop" earrings on his ears.

I find this whole look interesting. It does recapture lost symmetry. When you start to recede, often the recession isn't perfectly symmetrical and people pick up on that unconsciously; it spoils the symmetry of the face. Shaving your head brings back the symmetry, at least as far as the hair is concerned.

With the goatee and earrings, Mandel has increased the symmetry of his face by adding highly symmetric elements to the picture.

I think this is why so many women wear rather large "hoop" earrings sometimes. Models wear these especially. What they do is "trick" the viewers mind, on some unconscious level, into seeing the face as more symmetrical and therefore more beautiful. It is like subliminal suggestion. Symmetrical earrings force the viewers mind to perceive the wearer's face as very balanced across the plane of symmetry running down the center. It's something that occurs at a sub-verbal level; you're not conscious of it but it has an effect.

If you notice many balding men have lots of assymmetrical wisps of hair, combovers, etc. on their heads which REALLY detracts from their symmetry and makes them look quite ugly. Styling the remaining hair symmetrically, and adding a beard, often makes the man look better.

But of course, none of this compares to actually having a full, thick head of hair!

And I think that's why we're all here - to stay informed about the coming cure to our plight!
