<<Yeah chlorine is a wild element, but I have no problem gettng my hands on carbonyl chloride, I mean though it's dangerous it's just so vital in so many diffrent aspects of organic chemistry that any school with a substantial natrual science department is going to have it on hand.>>

It is very important in a number of orgo syntheses, but it is a pain in the ass to get. You're lucky your chem department is serious enough that they'll have it on hand. Big obstacle removed. BTW, do you have FTIR equipment you can use?

<<What concerns me is while reading through this pat. I am baffled by the fact that this drug has been said to be "VERY USEFUL" in the treatment of selveral diffrent types of cancers, and yet it is placed on the shelf. In my mind there are some serious ethical issues involved with this behavior, and leaves me just begging the question why? WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON?>>

It's probably not as sinister as it sounds; they're probably talking about androgen-dependent cancers like prostate cancer, which are typically treated with oral antiandrogens like flutamide and its derivatives. These compounds work pretty well as it stands, so it isn't as though people are dying left and right because Roussel-Uclaf isn't developing these antiandrogenic compounds. Maybe some of the compounds listed in the Roussel-Uclaf patent could be used for prostate cancer, I don't know. The one we're interested in - RU58841 - is designed to be a *topical* antiandrogen, not oral. I'm not sure what sort of activity it would have used orally- maybe Soulpt could comment more on this....
