This is what Waseda replied to a question concerning the effects of 5-alpha reductase type 1 & 2 on hairloss.

Type one 5 AR enzyme is mainly located in sebum gland of hair follicles. Studies show DHT in the gland causes excessive sebum secretion. And lipid oxidized together with keratin clogs the hair pores and blocks new hairs growth. We here call the hair loss of this type as conveniently 'type one hair loss'.

Seborrheic hair loss so called traditionally, is in fact a type one hair loss. We see rapid, a lot of hair fall outs together with greasy scalp. The apparent character of this type is that Finasteride works little for them. Maybe Dutasteide will help it. If crude estimation of 50% up of hair growth through Dutasteride, the rate of type one hair loss seems to be of such percentage--unexpectedly great.

'Type two hair loss' is mainly caused by the type two 5AR located around center part of hair follicles and papilla cells. I think this type hair loss progresses gradually due to weakened hair growth signals from papilla cells. So called M shaped hair loss and finally horse shoe hair loss are thought of the result of the type two hair loss.

Zinc ion mainly blocks type one 5 AR and Zinc Oxide treatment will work better for type one hair loss. In fact, as you feel through this treatment, excessive sebum often disappears.
