Allow me to preface this response with the observations that I am suspicious of the very nature of many of the information dissemination processes I have witnessed in these forums. A frequent pattern is: (1) I've got a secret (2) be nice to me and jump through a few hoops while I string you along, and I'll tell you my secret (3) I'm not going to tell my secret, because you weren't nice to me. Often there are several iterations of steps (2) and (3), as the "informant" appears to allow himself to be cajoled by the desparate pleas of some few of the "believers." However, step (3) is eventually encountered. Each time one of these "secrets" is introduced, there appears the threat, either implicitly or overtly - "if I don't tell you my secret, you'll stay bald forever or you'll be stuck with no recourse other than the currently available, relatively ineffectual treatments for hair loss." This is not the way research or progress in any respectable field proceeds. This is the way charlatans, poseurs, and scam artists have run their games for as long as mankind has kept notes on such things. Nobody who comes up with a REAL cure for hair loss is going to keep the product away from anybody. Anyone who claims otherwise should immediately become suspect of motive.

While I find many of the discussions naive, others obsessive, and few outright offensive, the contention that the forum is laughable implies rather a small degree of sympathy for the hair loss sufferers who post there. I find it improbable that anyone who has a hair loss problem would laugh at others with the same problem unless the "laugher" is seriously emotionally impaired. The pain of others is not funny, regardless the source of that discomfort (well, maybe in cartoons). Thus, I would lend but small credence to any claims made by such an individual on the basis of either the obviously ulterior motivation which must drive an individual without hair loss to misrepresent himself to the forum or the mental instability of a person who finds the pain of others to be "funny entertainment" (these are NOT mutually exclusive cases).

Where do people come up with this cloak-&-dagger nonsense? I've done research into human cognition. I've been professionally acquainted (providing assistance with statistical methodology) with researchers in the fields of clinical psychology, pharmacology, cancer and AIDS. None of these has involved "gag orders." Anybody else involved in the direction of investigational studies got a different experience? (NOTE: even if such orders proved common, I would remain unconvinced, since the appeal to such an "order" can be merely a convenient excuse for providing no verifiable claims)

Finally, we get the point and try to "set the hook." Scam alert!

"Blow the lid off" to whom? About what...are they using illegal technologies, dangerous and unapproved pharmacological agents, what? Smells like a bogus cover attempt to rehabilitate the name of "Livingston."

Misdirection attempt - "look kiddies, I tell you not to trust everybody, so I most not be trying sell you something" and/or "here's a potential focus, if you need a scapegoat."

Good advice. Better advice under the circumstance is don't uncritically accept the word of anybody you meet (especially anonymously) on the Wacky, Wonderful Web.

These were but a few possible (mistrustful) thoughts; others could no doubt be formulated. My interpretations may well be incorrect in any particular instance, but I find it most unlikely that similar interpretations are wrong in most of these cases. My intent in this writing will be met, if the reader is in some small sense inoculated against further harm from the pattern of abusive misinformation, speculation, and manipulation which frequently typifies the posts to these forums.
