I'm not looking to debate the issue, but it isn't the stem cells that are considered a human. It is the embryo that is killed to gain those stem cells. I agree with James Dobson on this point: "In order for scientists to isolate and culture embryonic stem cells, a living, human embryo must be killed. It is never morally or ethically justified to kill one human being in order to help benefit another. By requiring the destruction of embryos…embryonic stem cell research violates the medical ethic of 'Do No Harm.' "

I also found this interesting line on a pro-embryonic-stem-cell research site, "Stem cell research has been likened to lampshades made of human skin during the Nazi holocaust. They may be very attractive and useful lampshades; but a person was murdered during their construction." Obviously, this whole issue hangs on the matter of what constitutes a human being and whether a human being has the intrinsic right to live or whether we can sacrifice it to further our own ends. That is the first and most important question. Is it a human being 5 minutes before it's born? What about the day before that? And the day before that? Etc., etc. When was the magic moment it became a human being, and what happened in that moment that changed the essential nature of the baby? Clearly, it is biologically a human being from conception. Does the fact that it is a human being *biologically* grant it value (a *philosophical*, not scientific question)?

I agree that there is no room for flames on this subject, although I'll be surprised if they're not forthcoming anyway! :^)
