I think the question of whether a zygote is a human or not is fascinating.

I am not so smart, nor educated, especially in science, so I hold those who are in high esteem. Sometimes too high.

I know this much as a non-genius.

Humans come out of wombs as infants. Once out, they are accorded the status of human beings and for whatever reasons, logical or not, we then say that humans cannot be killed and acquire a whole slew of rights and powers over time so that they become part of our civilization. Indeed they acquire responsibilities later in life that they did not sign any agreement to before they were born.

Going backwards in time, that infant looks extremely similar to me to the baby born a month later.

Likewise for one a month earlier.

And a month earlier.

And so on.

The state has determined that there is a moment during pregnancy during which the thing becomes a citizen. It is an odd moment and somewhat magical in its arbitrariness. But it is one of the most dramatic moments in one's life, because at that moment, -legally- one begins to exist.

If they could pin point that moment to an exact day...call it "Exist Day" as opposed to a birth day, and you could have a count down to that moment, like the ball dropping on Times Square on midnight. Ten...nine...eight...etc.

YOU EXIST!!! (Music is audible to the child and may be helpful in its development so playing something like Mozart instead of John Phillips Souza may be wise on Exist Day.)

But I do not think that exact moment is demarcated legally as of yet.

Somehow, demarcating humans as worthy of such a thing as citizenry is the foundation of our civilization and hence, sanity. It is commonsensical that we cannnot kill others.

Why not? What is it about just being alive that should give us such entitlements as the right not to be killed?

It is a magical moment that is a mutually agreed upon decision common to human society.

I happen to like that particular magic and am kind of glad I made it past my own unofficial Exist Day.

Once born, all infants have these right according to the State.

It only is in utero that it is a question.

Now, smarter minds than mine have come up with some conclusions about when Exist Day has come and gone. I know they are smarter than me because they are greatly educated people who have spent a lot of time thinking about it.

But for me, I look at it like the knucklehead that I am.

The thing comes out a baby. For a dang long time during pregnancy, it sure looks like a baby.

When is the magic moment? I dunno. But that moment seems a bit like a decision based on magic...taa-daa...You exist now! as opposed to any logic.

But again, I am not a genius, and simpler of mind than many. I failed biology in high school and almost did the same with math.

But I saw a friend's sonogram the other day.

Whoa! The thing has a face!

Maybe the magical moment is when it has a face? Smile! You're on Candid Sonogram!
