You make some good points. I agree that his patent is very far from "state-of-the-art" in cell biology. Dr. Gho is a local dermatologist and hair transplant specialist in Maastricht, not a world-class researcher, and his patent shows it.

Nevertheless, you have to remember that the patent was granted in 1998, based on work done before then (approx. 1995-97). He's had almost 4 years since then to build on that work and improve upon it.

Plus, with the backing of ABN, he's now in the big leagues as far as financing is concerned. He'll get whatever resources he needs.

All that said, however, I still agree somewhat with your statement that it'll probably be another researcher who perfects the procedure, and comes out with a marketable hair cloning technique first, before Dr. Gho. I think Dr. Unger has a very good chance of beating Gho at this. The notion that Unger is "far behind Gho" is illusory. Unger has been doing work in this field for over a decade, and has the resources of the University of Toronto, plus his own VC backing.

Beyond this, there are other researchers in other parts of the world who are also making advancements in this field. I think something might come out of the University of Southern California (in LA) soon. Also, there are the scientists in France who recently grew new hair on mice.
