Hey Bill. The thing about that statistic that really grabs me is the most obvious one- that is, the older you get, the higher your odds are of suffering from MPB. This is somewhat counter-intuitive, considering that T levels begin to decline in men after the age of 30 or so. Why should a guy begin to bald at, say, 55 when his circulating androgen levels are well off their maxima? The same question could be asked of BPH (also an androgen-driven process)- why do men usually only suffer from this ailment after 60? My personal opinion is that as the serum T levels drop with age, the body's feedback loops attempt to maintain homeostasis by increasing cellular androgen receptor density and increasing levels of 5-ar in selected tissues. This is, after all, the purpose of 5-ar in the body- to "amplify" the effects of T in target tissues by converting it to the more potent DHT. I have not seen any medical data which supports my guess, so I may be way off base here.
