Yes, all this is true combined with the absolutely overwhelming (and unstoppable) power of the medical profession (through the state licensing boards) which has the ability to "define" any invasive process as medical, and thus create the presumption (a rightful presumption, in most cases) that the process should be performed by medical professionals.

To assume that a group of consumers who oppose this will be any more effective than other previous consumer groups who've advocated that non-MDs (or non-RNs) be able to perform other procedures (minor operations, etc.) is just extremely naive. It would take a revolution in the way medical procedures are regulated around the country, and it would have to be done state-by-state, through the legislatures. When you consider the time and manpower involved, that would almost be the equivalent of amending the U.S. Constitution.

But the point is, we don't need to waste all that time on idealistic distractions, we need to GET HAIR MULTIPLICATION AVAILABLE TO PATIENTS AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.

Once Bill receives his hair multiplication (from a doctor or an RN under an MDs supervision), and it's all paid for, he won't be crusading as much for hairdressers and cosmetologists to do it.

The legal ramifications alone of such a change as Bill proposes (who would bear liability for infections, contaminated cell cultures, nonadherence to sterile technique, and a myriad of other possible problems) would pose almost insurmountable obstacles to non-medical people getting involved. Inevitably there would be lawsuits which the non-medical people would defend by saying they weren't trained in medical techniques. Legislators, professional groups, and trade associations invariably predict such eventualities in advance, and don't permit non-medical people to do such procedures. One of the very rare exceptions is midwifery, where non-MD, non-RN people (usually specially trained women) are permitted to set up practices to aid in childbirth. But there's hundreds of years of tradition behind that profession. Carving out a narrow exception for cosmetitians to do "hair multiplication" in 2002 is a joke, because such an exception would never be made for any other procedure of similar invasiveness. It's the height of naivete and misplaced idealism to think any legislature or any state medical board would make an exception just for us, just to lower the price of this procedure, NO MATTER WHAT THE ARGUMENTS ARE -- and yes, I admit, there are some good arguments, as advanced by Bill. The problem is not necessarily with the validity or logic of Bill's arguments, the problem is with the naivete of them. It's an argument that's blind to day-to-day reality.
