Yes WB, you're absolutely right. What's happening is that the HMOs (health maintenance organizations), in an effort to cut costs, permit non-RNs such as nurse's aides, etc. to be compensated for work that would traditionally be the purview of an RN. Likewise in psychiatry, the HMOs allow psychologists (who are not MDs, but still highly quaified in their own rights with Ph.D degrees) to do work that previously was done by psychiatrists. Sometimes this work is even delegated to social workers. Anyway, this trend is on the whole absolutely reprehensible, and in many cases result in inadquate care being rendered. It's just another example of one of the "wonders" of capitalist society.

In the former Soviet Union, we had highly trained psychiatrists with MD degrees committing political dissidents to insane asylums.

In the USA, under the HMO system, we have social workers and people with "counseling" degrees rendering primary care to schizophrenics, while the psychiatric profession has been reduced to mere prescription writing (a fascinating book has been published recently on this subject -- the death of modern psychiatry in the USA -- I'll get the reference for you all soon.)
