It's a 5 alpha reductase inhibitor. It prevents the reduction of testosterone to DHT. It works similar to Propecia, except it inhibits both types of 5 alpha reductase, and therefore provides a greater reduction of DHT (~90 - 95%). Since DHT is the main contributing androgen in MPB, both Propecia and dutasteride are used as treatments.
